Abstract MAR (matrix attachment regions) are specific DNA sequences that can combine with nuclear matrix. They are very conservative on the evolution, and they have a very important role in chromosome fold of the eukaryotic genomes. When the MAR sequences are constructed to both sides of the transgene, the expression of transgene will be increased and the differences among individuals can be reduced. Therefore, MAR have become one of the highlights research in the field of animals and plants gene engineering. This review was mainly introduced the following aspects of MAR:the characteristics, the distribution and function, the influence of transgenic animals and the possible mechanisms involved.
