Abstract This paper reports on our observation that progenies derived from rice plants pollinated by pollens of Oenothera biennis exhibited distinct variations in numerous morphological and developmental traits. Through pedigree selection on these plants, genetically stable lines were obtained, which are useful as new germplasms for rice breeding. Several representative rice lines were selected for AFLP analysis. Results showed that these lines indeed contained extensive genetic variations resolvable by the AFLP marker, which included lose of rice parental bands and/or appearance of novel bands. . Tthe characteristics and usefulness of this new distant hybridization, i.e., repeated pollination, was discussed.
