Abstract Plant farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase(FPPS) is a key branch-point enzyme in mevalonate pathway, and it is involved in the synthesis of isoprenoids viz. chlorophylls, carotenoids, cytokinins, abscisic acid, gibberellins, dolichols, terpenoids, ubiquinones, sterols and phytotoxins required in the essential biological processes such as growth, development, reproduction and adaptation to the environmental challenges. To provide the theory basis of FPPS in plant evolution study and genetic improvement, this paper summarizes the advances in the cloning and expression of FPPS gene, and its enzyme kinetics.
