Abstract A keratinase-producing gram-positive bacterium, Bacillus sp.YYW-1, isolateded from feather waste, was identified as Bacillus subtilis and named as Bacillus subtilis YYW-1, based on its morphology, physiological and biochemical characteristics, growth and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The optimum temperature and the optimum pH of the keratinase were determined to be 60℃ and 7.2, respectively, and its activity could be completely inhibited by EDTA and PMSF.
